Masters - Chance of Admittance

A lot of undergraduate students are interested doing a post graduate course. This website is aimed at helping students understand the current status of admissions in universities and calculate their chance of admittance into a university.

The Data

The data used here was collected by Mohan S Acharya et al. for their work A Comparison of Regression Models for Prediction of Graduate Admissions. It has the following features, all of which are taken into consideration in this website.

• GRE Score (out of 340)
• TOEFL Score (out of 120)
• University Rating (out of 5)
• Strength of Statement of Purpose (out of 5)
• Strength of Letter of Recommendation (out of 5)
• Undergraduate (out of 10)
• Research Experience (Yes/No)

All these features are used to predict an applicant's chance of admittance.

SHAP

In this website, the importance of the above mentioned features is described in term of SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations). It is a unified approach to explain the output of any machine learning model. Basically, a higher SHAP value means a higher influence on the model's prediction.

GRE

The Graduate Record Examinations is a standardized test that is an admissions requirement for most graduate schools in the United States. The GRE is owned and administered by Educational Testing Service.

We can see in the above plot that a high GRE score with Research experience can have a positive effect on your chances and a low GRE score with no Research experience can bring your chances down.

TOEFL

Test of English as a Foreign Language® is a standardized test to measure the English language ability of non-native speakers wishing to enroll in English-speaking universities. The test is accepted by many English-speaking academic and professional institutions. TOEFL is one of the two major English-language tests in the world, the other being the IELTS

A good TOEFL score and a good GRE score seems to have a good effect on your chances of getting into the college you want.

CGPA

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Points Average) is a grade pointing system used in the educational sector. Cumulative Grade Points is the average of grade points obtained in all the subjects.

Whoa! CGPA and GRE score together seem to have a the most effect on your chances. A good GRE score can still have a negative effect on your chance if your CGPA is low.

University Rating, Statement of Purpose, Letter of Recommendation

When compared to the rest of the features, these have relatively low effect on your chances. but they still matter. An interesting thing to note here is that no matter how high your GRE score is, a lack of research experience can still bring your chance down and vice versa.
